This odd looking man auditions for "Britain's Got Talent" and ends up sounding like the next Luciano Pavarotti. Paul Potts sings Nessun Dorma.

Laughed and cried. This guy, a normal guy, just blew me away. Seeing him on the street you wouldn't think twice about him. Here him sing, god can he sing, and you know, just know, there's some deep wet soul in that pudgy meat puppet of a man.

sorry to inform you, but.....

this guy DOES sound amazing....but he should considering all the traing he's had. Sorry to burst the bubble but check this out http://www.bathopera.co.uk/Past Productions/Aida/aida_biographies.htm

wonderful!
written by Jodes on June 11, 2007

Jody, you don't get to sing like that without a stupendous amount of training. Opera singing is difficult, intense, with a lot of focus on the details. Twas gratifying to see the audience respond so positively to him, I hope that these type of Come one, come all talent shows give more people the opportunity to discover classical musicians all over again.

reality check
written by patrick on June 11, 2007

That was amazingly unimpressive. Pavarotti had power and suppleness. This man just had an overly sentimental audience and bank of judges. His voice is thin and forced as can be heard in the wobbly vibrato. The reaction by the audience and judges was bizarre.

written by ryan on June 11, 2007

patrick, compared to the horrible range control of the average pop singer, it provides an amazing contrast doesnt it? Also recall that this is TV recording equipment, so its not going to capture everything very well.

Maybe you should concentrate on how him being on the show could open peoples eyes to opera?

While paul is hardly untrained, he *does* work in a cell phone shop, so by definition he is an amateur.

just sayin'

Wow Indeed
written by adam on June 12, 2007

"retardest", "cryed", "stupit", "discusted", you RoB are obviously a simpleton with no regards for the finer things in life. This man's talent is amazing, and with some training he will probably have a great career in opera.

stacked deck

The guy sure can sing, but the editing was rather corny; it detracted from the true impact of the performance.

If he played Radames in Aida...
written by Steve on June 12, 2007

As seen in the link someone posted earlier:

http://www.bathopera.co.uk/Past Productions/Aida/aida_biographies.htm

Paul's voice is far too small to play Radames in Aida, or Calaf, the character who sings "Nessun Dorma" in Turandot. I suspect Paul knows this. His 'mastery' of opera singing is not "unexpected," though. Playing roles like Don Basilio and Radames in a small house makes him a beginning professional. He sounds like what opera mavens would call a "character" tenor -- a thinnish voice that might have the potential to grow and fill out, but not a virtuoso leading tenor like Pavarotti was. Pav was a big dummy (learned everything by ear, if you know the libretti, he screws up his words all the time, switches them around), but his vocal ability was always unquestionable. Why? He sounded so free when he sang. It sounded easy. Paul is okay, but he's not making it look easy, or free. Coulda been nerves on that video, though.

I'm admiring Paul for his chutzpah and thinking out of the box. Hell, if we have an equivalent show here in the U.S., I may give it a try, myself. I don't even sell mobile (cell) phones.

FWIW, I'm a trained tenor, been singing classical music since I was 17, recognized immediately that Paul's talent would be considered modest (at best) in opera circles, and I still teared up watching that video. Hey, anybody but Bocelli, is my thinking.

Meant to add...
written by Steve on June 12, 2007

I'm just saying, I'd like to see more English, Canadian, and American tenors get the kinds of breaks we usually see given to Italian and Latin tenors. If Paul has a chance for that "break" -- being a classical tenor who achieves some sort of pop recognition from the general public -- go for it, is what I say. I get tired of the public thinking you are not a real opera singer unless you have a generous number of vowels in your last name.

trained versus untrained
written by Frances on June 12, 2007

I've been totally in love with Pavarotti's interpretation of Nessun Dorma since the first time I've heard it. This guy does not have that range and seeming effortlessness. I can see where he would be considered an average singer among opera professionals. But Paul is not a professional singer. Imagine his natural talent, and it is there, being nurtured and trained from a young age. That would be something totally different. A pro is not going to be impressed, but without the benefit of a formal singing education Paul did very well indeed.
Anyone who thinks he's crap and is not a professional singer: you try it and see how easy it is. There's lots of people out there with a career in singing who would have a hard time matching his range.
The editing was horrible, and he's certainly not the best I've heard, but it wasn't all that bad either.

Natural Talent
written by Beatriz on June 12, 2007

It's true he dosen't sound like he could pulled off an etire opera like Turandot, Aida or Othello, at this time, but he was very impressive for an amature. He is probably self trained, one does not need to have voice training lessons to sing like that, just the natral talent, ear and drive. People forget, or are unaware, that Pavarotti was an auto mechanic's assistant, who sang in his church choir, when he was "discovered" and although Paul is no Pavarotti he still could live out his dream. He's a good light tenor now, imagine when may be with proper training? He's not that far from Carreras in sound now, who knows down the road.

I think that was fantastic!!
written by Nagasuri on June 12, 2007

Coming from an average Joe, I think that was really good. Made me cry when I saw the video. The point of such shows is to find raw talent, not someone whose already polished. He's very potential. End of story. Critics will always be critics. Putting people down shows lack of confidence in one's self.Wish the guy well, eh.

Good for an amateur
written by Filmmaker78 on June 12, 2007

If a young budding opera singer gave up the dream, and then came back 15 years later to give it another go, this is about what I would expect. I have dated an opera singer (sopranos) and attended a handful of professional operas. Singing classical music and singing pop music require completely different skill sets. I know opera singers who can reach notes we can't even fathom, but sound completely average when belting out the latest pop music at the local karaoke bar.

Still, having said all of that, it's refreshing to see someone with a real, professionally trained voice expose what a bunch of pretenders most otehr contestants on these talent shows really are.

...
written by SB on June 12, 2007

absolutely FANTASTIC and heart-moving. anybody remember Pavarotti before he "made it?" Neither do I. Let's not compare a refined professional with a guy with an untapped enormous potential. The whole point is that, after watching this, almost anybody would want to see that potential developed.

Magnificent.
written by 19 on June 12, 2007

Third poster or so down has it exactly: "I have no idea what he was saying and still he made me cry."

Dear gods, that's what music IS, and to see someone make some on one of these shows did my heart unbelievable good.

I'm not particularly into opera or classical, and we can imagine most of the audience wasn't either. That's real talent; it transcends genre or taste, it's self-evident, unignorable, and precious. I'm in awe. The fact that this treasure was selling bloody car phones is hideous. I can't wait to hear more.

When you move a judge to tears, I think you officially win. : ) Moved me to tears, too. The several times I've watched it. (long hard standing applause)

And the winner is... the video editor!
written by Bob on June 12, 2007

The singing is pretty impressive - but not as impressive as the manipulative video editing. Unfortunately manipulative video editing is much more common than beautiful opera singing, so we don't notice it as much.
Having said that, anyone who can bring fine art to the masses and get them to appreciate it has my vote!

Cell Phone.
written by WillowFox on June 12, 2007

He needs to sing a cellphone ad, and have it subtitled with a standing ovation at the end. Singing about maximum coverage, free long distance, and free nights and weekends.

@SB
written by Steve on June 12, 2007

SB -- FWIW, I've heard recordings of Pavarotti dating back to when he and his father were members of a men's chorus in Modena, in the early '60s. Pav was still selling insurance. There was no mistaking the golden sheen and unfettered freedom in his voice, even singing first tenor in the men's chorus (his father was actually the soloist in the choral recording I heard). There is simply no comparing the two, LP and Mr. Potts. I have a recording of Pavarotti singing Rodolfo's aria in Boheme in a provincial Italian house in 1965 or '66. The recording quality is bad, but it still can't disguise his astonishing ease with which he soared up to b-flats and high Cs. I've heard only two other tenors with gifts similar to Pavarotti's: one is already a star (Roberto Alagna), and the other, an American named Gregory Turay, is high-level pro who is on his way to being a star, already sings at the Met. Paul Potts makes for an appealing everyman, and I hope he wins the whole thing, but hearing Pavarotti before he was a "refined professional" only underscores just how phenomenal he truly was.

WOW
written by Bill Moriarty on June 12, 2007

You can nitpick each and every note but you can't manufacture the emotion he brings to this piece or that his signing brings to so many. He sings in an amateur company in Bath that produces one opera a year. He paid to go to a master class with Pavoriti in Italy. What you see and hear is a person who LOVES what he is doing and that love comes through loud and clear. It is easy to be negative - how many people could get this kind of reaction? Bravo, Paul

written by DS on June 13, 2007

I've only been two 2 operas, Aida and La Bohemme, and this moved me to tears whereas the others didn't. Whatever he lacks to become "one of the best" is certainly made up in appeal. What a wonderful reaction from the crowd.

The Soul
written by Nonnie on June 13, 2007

I have said for decades that the one thing all humans around the world have in common is "music." And there are so many levels of music and different genre's that if opera doesn't move your soul, than perhaps another type of music does. Iam also amazed that there are only 7 notes that create all music, no matter what your preference is. 7 notes. It boggles the mind.

Actually, Nonnie there are 12 notes. You forgot the sharps and flats.

I did like this performance. Yes, he's had some training and is not entirely self-taught. But even better, even if he is not the next Pav, he has a passion and has pursued it. I'm happy when someone can sing opera and move people who "say" they don't like opera.

written by Mrs B on June 15, 2007

Who cares if he's been trained a little, when you have an interest it's normal to explore it until you have some expertise in it. Do you think the puppet guy Damon hasn't practised his skill or been on the circuit for a few years or maybe you believe our Damon's been playing with his monkey on his own, never showing his talent to a single soul. Don't be niave and what about the Baton Twirler, his granny trained him for 11 years. Paul's just a guy with an incredible talent and at last found the courage to stand up on his own and be heard and I'm glad he did because he's really opened people's eyes to what talent is and no one can deny he has it in abundance. As for those "bubble bursters" who like to say" Hate to inform you but he's trained" you're just trying to legitimize your jealousy, we know he's trained because Italian is not something he could have learned on his own. We vote for Paul because he deserves to be voted for. It's his time and we want him to have it!

Wouldn't we all have the drive to do that?! Best of luck to him! And putts to you RoB C that can't spell - or can't type!

Paul's first recording will come out around July 11. The power of his singing is the emotion. There is something almost magical about him. He inspires the same kind of reaction in almost everyone who hears him: tears and goosebumps. What is that? He is awe-inspiring and I wish him the best. And of course the mouth-breathers and the opera mavens will attack him because that is what they do. He has a very thin skin, unfortunately, and when the nay-sayers start loosing their vitriol on him, he might be very hurt, but I hope he sails through such things. Bravo, Paul!

Sure is easy for folks here to criticize isn't it?
Well I sure as hell couldn't sing like that, and opera isn't easy.
I've been watching America's got talent, and I haven't seen too much talent there like this guy. He's a great singer! He'll go far

This man has a God given talent that is mesmerizing! I can only imagine how fabulous he will sound in a few years when he is concentrating on singing and not selling mobile phones! I can hardly wait until he starts preforming & touring! I will be in line for the first tickets!

Paul Potts has a God given voice. Only a few shall enter the gates of heaven and it is my belief that Paul has been chosen by a higher power. When I listen to him he makes me happy if only for a few minutes of the day. Thank you Paul for sharing your voice with the world. Your voice is unbelieveable!
