Penn & Teller Bullshit!: The Bible Myth

"The whole thing is so patently infantile, so foreign to reality, that to anyone with a friendly attitude to humanity it is painful to think that the great majority of mortals will never be able to rise above this view of life."

I am Roman Catholic...and agree with what Bullshit says. No Catholic I have spoken to think the Bible is even meant to be taken literally. It uses analogies and metaphors to establish contentions and values. That is all...

Creation

No thinking person believes that the world was created in 6 days, and few I know believe that the act of believeing precisely that is important. I believe that the creation myth (yes, myth) in the bible is truth - albeit truth in our documentary-ridden times is historically a new concept. The original meaning of "myth" is not "fairy tale", but "a story or idea described in another way for the purposes of clarity". In this sense, Aesop's fables are myths - not arbitrary animal stories, but designed to get a point across.

But consider the wealth of creation myths, and how much strange material they may contain. Consider the fights among gods, turtles and what-have-yous.... then forget the 21st century demand for "accuracy" and consider what the points behind the biblical story are:
First there was nothing, darkness. Suddenly there was light. Then there was water. Then earth. Then fish. Then plants. Then animals. Then mankind.
I, for one, find it strange than this order of business is quite supported by the scientific view. Why light first? Why not build a man, then give him somewhere to live, then turn on the light so he could see? Where are the divers who dive down into the ocean, bringing up mud to spread on the back of a turtle in order to become dry land? (An Indian myth) There are so many mythological elements and stories which could have been entangled in this creation myth - but isn't.
The seven (six) days are no problem. They are merely a way to give a poetic frame to time periods which the people of that day could not grasp (and indeed, most people of OUR day). That the story is poetry is clear from the repetitions (And it was evening, and it was morning the Nth day)
It seems just silly to "refute" such a story. Just as silly as if the "Mythbusters" crew went to great lengths to prove that it is actually impossible for one fat guy to distribute Christmas presents all over the world...

Clarification

I see now that my witty neding remark may lead people to believe I actually DO believe that the biblical creation myth is a n invention on par with Santa Claus - I obviously do not...
But the bible makes the assumption that God actually exists, has created the Universe and cares about it. If you do not believe in THAT, the point of disproving walking on water, burning bushes, water-into-wine, virgin birth etc. disappears completely. Those ARE impossible, leaving nature to its own devices. The uneducated people of those times knew that as well as we do, or else they would abviously not have been viewed as miracles.
So Pen & Teller would have to disprove that a Supreme Being does not and cannot exist, and in any case He/She/It could not perform what we would call miracles. Like to see them do that.

People can argue all they want, they can deny the Power of God and doubt His Word...they can try to reduce parts of it to fairy tale or allegory or just plain error...Problem is, when you start to question the accuracy of the Bible, where do you stop? You wind up doing like these two comedians...you deny it all..

well you can deny Jesus if they want...but in the end we'll see who was right or wrong won't we?

The Book says EVERY knee will bow..EVERY tongue will confess.

It's your soul. you can lose it if you want to.

Hell is real and there is only One Way around it.

I know it and all those who will be saved already know it.

Jesus said "my sheep hear my voice".

Some of you don't hear, some won't hear, some can't hear.

I won't argue with any of you because it would be pointless.

It's like singing to a deaf person.
