This is killing the music industry!

Re: Jonas

this _is_ what the music industry, this is what shit-bag major record labels do for money.

the music industry is killing music. or at least, the music most people listen to.

Steve Poltz played my wedding!
written by Geoff Canyon on December 3, 2006

The musician in this clip, Steve Poltz, played at my wedding fifteen years ago. The first time my wife and I heard Jewel's first album, we knew Steve was involved -- his style rings through. He's great fun to see live. If you get the chance definitely check him out.

Steal music
written by Mega Greg on December 3, 2006

This is why you need to keep on stealing music off the internet like I do (not exactly stealing for me since I live in Canada). The less money big record companies get from garbage, the less of it they'll produce.

Pizza
written by hah on December 3, 2006

I found the random eating of pizza hilarious.

Yep, steal it all.
written by Rock Boy on December 3, 2006

I'm in full agreement. I'm stealing all my music until these shitbags go under. Remember music of the 60's? Why was it so good? Because it was made by real people with real ideas, promoted by real people and real venues. Not by idiotic models who don't know a damn thing about music.

NOT "Stealing"
written by MPAA Guru on December 3, 2006

False propaganda, that. To steal or be a thief/pirate, you would take something away from another - and they would no longer possess it. You control your own property and are free to share it if you wish.

Remember the Monkey's ?
written by Slacker on December 3, 2006

.. and they weren't the first. How many songs were written by Carole King for others? Burt Barcharach? Paul Williams? I agree that it's getting worse when the "artists" can't write their own music or lyrics, can't play music, and now can't sing(!).

technology and its price
written by gunther on December 3, 2006

The affordability of really-damn-good-sounding music-making technology has come way way down in the last 10 years, and is great news for those of us who always said "why do I have to have 8 billion dollars and a contract to easily make something that sounds really kick ass"? But the increase in competition for notice from people who you want to buy your stuff is pretty massive... there's nothing to do but keep on keepin' on. If people really like your stuff, and you put it out there, you might have a chance. Otherwise, good luck fighting the sexy and young for mass attention in the pop arena. I'm not saying that's necessarily 'bad', just that that is how it is.

Now, if she gets busted a la Milli Vanilli during a live performance, she gets what she deserves...

Wow, I want to buy that record.

She is hot!

old news
written by celticagent on December 3, 2006

why is this all of a sudden new news? anybody who's studied music history knows this story. it's as old as the hills.

what makes it cool is it's on youtube so now every noob and tween can see how it's really done. maybe then these kids will stop supporting the pop music industry with their downloads and their ipods and go out to their local clubs and pubs to hear how real musicians work their craft

my 2 cents

exposure is all you need

Very true. Most people know it's true, but "out of sight, out of mind". Publishing the truth in a ubiquitous and entertaining forum like youtube makes it harder to ignore, and might generate some disdain, or even outrage. (Depends on how seriously you take your music.)

Most people knew smoking caused cancer, but the tobacco companies' internal memos really shoved the public's collective nose in it. And it pissed them off.

Stealing Music?
written by David on December 3, 2006

So if you're stealing music off the internet to bankrupt the music industry, exactly who's music are you stealing anyways? Are you stealing the bubblegum pop fake music that you deplore (so does that make you a slime bag for ranting against it?) or the music where artists really pour their hearts into it (thereby bankrupting the producers of the really great music instead)?

Theft Just Encourages Them
written by Skyler on December 3, 2006

Yeah, if you're stealing to make them go under then you don't understand how the industry works. You steal from one artist they have twenty others. You steal from those twenty artists, they'll just drop those artists and pick up forty more. The big five, Bertlesmann Music Group (BMG), Sony Music, Warner Brothers, Universal, and EMI all don't give a fuck about their artists. Not a single musician enters a contract with any money in it. It's all advances and royalties to pay back those advances. Even the 'pop stars' aren't making as much money as you expect they would. These companies are banking corporations. They lend money out to the artists on contract and, guess what, when Kevin Federline's album tanks who has to cover the costs? It's not the record companies, that's for sure. It gets worse for the smaller, non-national artists signed to large distribution contracts. Unlike K-Fed they will definitely not be able to covere costs recouped after roalties if their album doesn't sell.

It's our own fault, we just don't want to admit it
written by It's our own fault, we just do on December 3, 2006

The reason why formulaic music is popular is because we, the public, choose to buy their records. No one is holding a gun to anyone's head forcing us to like this stuff. We're getting exactly what we want, and apparently we want plastic, manufactured crap.

Autotune
written by Peabody on December 3, 2006

..is so cool, I've been using it for years. Mind you, the vocals I need to fix are nowhere near as bad as hers.

If you are worried...
written by metavirus on December 4, 2006

If you are worried that the industry is killing music because they make music to serve a mass audience then I think you should look at yourself and wonder why you are even bothering to steal this crap... I mean seriously who cares about this music? Retarded white trash and the mentally abscent? So they can have it. Are you upset because of the money they get that should go to some other greedy arse musician who wont "sell out"?

Music is already dead. Just buy the music you DO like from the bands you think are worth while, support them, because if you bother with the other crap then you are just providing extra free marketing.

written by Sem on December 5, 2006

old news, and so what? there will always be dumb idiots that like this kinda thing, it aint killin shit, good music still sells...and you guys didn't even pull it off easy, cheap lookin video, crap lighting, bad acting, terrible hook and way to much fx on her voice...

music
written by buy independent on December 6, 2006

just buy independent music and "vote with your money" to support who you want to support so they can continue making music. crappy pop will always be there but there is plenty of great music out there being made on it's own terms to counteract that.

I don't understand
written by Berf on December 9, 2006

What language is she speaking??? And why are thre so many bears in her hair? God I love her voice, it rings true like a purple hammock in the silver wind of venus

"Music" is no longer. Its been DEAD for years
written by mike on December 12, 2006

there's no such thing as music anymore. It died around 1989 and everything since then has sucked to holy high hell. no wonder people dont want to pay for this crap.

So even though I can't carry a tune in a bucket with a lid on it, I too can become a pop sensation? Although I admit that I'll need some help with the looks from a special effects group. Haha. This is the way it's done. 'Just look good and we'll worry about the rest.' It's not about the music anymore. It's all about sex. Who cares that you can't sing or play as long as you are sexy in that plastic barbie doll way. Society is going down the drain.

haha yeah, its all about 45yr old men writing lyrics in the first person of a young girl! America is AWESOME!!!

Let's see them make this video using the ugly woman w/ the afro in the video...can you say EXTREME makeover?
written by Johnny on January 6, 2007

Or..better yet...using Hilary Rodham Clinton as the sexy pop star! LOLOLOLOL

Idol Maker
written by Lucas on January 9, 2007

Anybody see the movie the The Idolmaker (1980)? The story is told 27 years ago already.

I think this is good thing. There are plenty old man performing similar songs. If the music sounds and looks better performed by a young girl, why not. The adjustments they made to the basic chords and melody were rather good. Besides the composer gets paid well for a succesfull song.

TO the person that saif the ugly woman with the afro
written by Tasha on January 13, 2007

First off that is Erikah Badu. And she is a real singer. She writes her own music. She may not be able to play any instruments but her voice alone is one. She has plenty of videos out. She sings neo-soul music. Grant it that wig/weave in her hair is not attractive but she is an attractive woman with great words to sing. Find pictures of her without all of that crap she had in her head.

Have a cry.
written by Sooks on January 16, 2007

If you dont like it dont listen to it. Maybe what you fail to realise is that there is a market for people that look good and can't sing and get processed. Not worth having a cry about, go out there and do better... oh wait... you can't and thats why your all upset... *sniff*

If you're still not convinced...

No, no, no
written by Lee on April 21, 2007

I think you people are missing the point. A good song stands on its own no matter who writes it or, as is the case with most pop tarts, who "interprets" it. What is needed is a greater emphasis on good songwriting. In pop music, this entails above all a pretty, catchy and memorable vocal melody. Once this preliminary step is accomplished, the focus should shift to creating an exciting arrangement/backing track to present the vocal melody in its best light. At this stage, a strong performance of the melody is also required of the popstar in question because even though most mistakes in performance can indeed be corrected with the right software, passion can't be faked. The singer must bring it. Finally, the song needs to be mixed and produced. This is where special effects are added and the overall sound is tweaked to accommodate the different sound systems it will likely be played on.

The problem with the song created in this video is the same with many of today's pop songs: They aren't really songs at all, but tracks. The vocal melody (if you can call it that) can't really be sung away from the hot track that supports it because it just isn't compelling enough on its own. The songwriters here should have first worked on creating an awesome stand-alone vocal melody, and worked their way up from there.

A house is guaranteed to tumble without a strong foundation, and so is a song.

I agree
written by lisa on August 30, 2007

I mean, I know everything's commercialized and fake and digitally produced. Lip synching and airbrushing and photoshop and all that.
But...fuck, I liked that song.
*sigh*
