That's great. We need a lot more videos like this of religious people acting crazy. Good job kid. Just be honest.

Clearly we can see how religion propagates in society, not through effect or purpose, but through fear and family-imposed restrictions. Not a great way to make a case.

Andy(Right On) & Steven(Clearly), both of your statements could be used with several categories - not just religion.

"That's great. We need a lot more videos like this of [religious, conservative, liberal, etc.] people acting crazy. Good job kid. Just be honest."

"Clearly we can see how [religion, liberal, conservative, etc] propagates in society, not through effect or purpose, but through fear and family-imposed restrictions. Not a great way to make a case."

Steven & Andy, what is being shown is a teenager in a hostile environment. "Mom" has a real problem with anger-management, and was probably raised by a dominant mother. Notice that "Dad" doesn't start a rebuttal, Mom does.

In this family, Mom rules and the males "better" do what she says.

In a real non-dysfunctional family, there's little anger(in your face type) spewing forth like this. I hope that Junior is able to meet some true Christians and find out that we aren't all like "Mom."

Besides, Mom could just as easily replied with, "What's this crap, you believe in God. Are you nuts?"

See, it's not about religion; Mom's got some real emotional problems.

no - that's not it

"mom" or as I like to call her "dominating whench married to a ball-less piece" is a tool of the religous right who can't handle anyone with a different set of values than hers - no, she is just a tool

Yes, its there son and legally they have "control" over him till hes 18, but they should love him no matter what. It shouldn't matter what he believes or doesn't believe, all that should matter is that he's be safe and healthy. Yelling is definitely not going to make him believe in "GOD".

Interesting...

Humanity needs desperately to evolve past the destructive disease of religion. Good for you, kid! You are more evolved and a lot smarter thatn your parents.

You better believe or else
written by Mr Cruz on May 14, 2007

That is the worst sin ever, this is not about religious, it's about believing in god alone, just remember to all the people that said did not believe in god, what happen to them? gone, simply gone, sorry for you kid, it's time for you to take that back and start believing in god, good one mom, let him start paying for his rent, education, clothes, car, all his expenses and trust me he will start believing in god when he gets some needs, he is probably spoiled all the way, take all that sipport out and he will start believing in something, kid just look around, do you think all this was created by itself? just imaging the world suspended in the middle of nothing, do you think that happen for nothing? or because there is no god? think twice when you say something like that, god bless you my friend.

God Gene
written by Steven McCarty on May 14, 2007

I've never really viewed my doubt as an asset. Quite the contrary. I often envy religious friends, because I see how their faith comforts them. Sometimes I think of my skepticism as a disorder, like being colorblind or tone-deaf. Perhaps I'm missing what one geneticist has called "the God gene," an innate predilection for faith (although I'm skeptical of that theory, too). But skepticism has its pleasures; I like the feeling of traveling lightly through life, unencumbered by beliefs

Religion is a set of beliefs (wether true or untrue) held by a group of people. Anyone who wants to get rid of religion in general (not just a specific belief) is an idiot. You might as well say anyone believing in anything is the worlds problem. The belief that there should be no beliefs, is a belief and religion. Not to mention belly aching over the fact that people believe in things that you disagree with is not going to stop people from believing in something not to mention if you convert them to your beliefs, then you've evolved into no more than just another evangelist indeed. Anti-religion logic is illogical also right wing and christianity aren't synonyms except in a person with an ignorant very restricted and tunnel visioned mind.

Knowing
written by Steven mcCarty on May 14, 2007

Believing in anything is not the problem, it is in the act of believing that is the problem, and it is in the knowing that fixes the problem. 90% of scientists do not believe in a supreme being and 90% of non-scientists believe there is a supreme being. The Constitution forbids the promotion of religion, but it does not forbid religion from promoting a government. The evolved effect is we live in a corporatocracy established by a theocratic majority. And secularists are the enemy of the state. 95% of the world's population believe in a supreme being, you just can't fool all the people all of the time, Thank God. Now I need to go order some of those "Miriacle Spring Water", magnetic curing braclets, World.com stock, Nigerian Bank accounts, goverment grant info. etc, etc.

The religion of the against with nothing to be for, is not the solution. This poor family, is a sad case. He is to be pittied, Because His mother doesn't have the knowlege or wisdom to give him understanding. She has only an unfounded emotional belief in something she doesn't understand. Unfortunately as well many will be more misdirected by the anti-religion religion as they take advantage of this unbalanced situation envolving an obviously unstable woman, and use it to validate their lame brained, stereotypical, over-generalizations of ALL religious belief systems except their own 'anti-religious' religious belief system. Their anti-religious beliefs are no more then an unproven philosophy of how to make the world a better place based on converting other away from the persons own beliefs to their religious belief system = The anti-religious are religious just like the rest of us!!! Also they are emotional and hostile toward any other belief system = Fanatically religiously zealous. Search for the truth in your own heart being honest with yourself and the belief in the truth not anti-belief will make you free.

sad
written by Hil on May 14, 2007

As a Christian this is horribly sad. The mother obviously has anger issues. The father was obviously scared to step. I grew up in a Christian family, and yes, I questioned. No one freaked out on me and I knew I'd be loved despite what I chose to believe. Love and tolerance are what faith and Christianity are all about. I'm sorry that people who don't believe have to see a woman blowing up and I'm sorry that it involved Christ. Christ would never have condoned that type of behavior. If the gospels are read, even if you don't believe, you would see Jesus as a incredibly loving figure who embraced people during terrible parts of their lives when all had turned against them. He preaced love-not vengeance, hate, etc. Regardless of what this boy, or anyone else, believes I hope they find love and peace inside themselves as well as people that surround them with support and care.

Christians generally don't act this way - this woman was out of control
written by LyndaLBD on May 14, 2007

I'm sorry to say, but she was totally out of control. I am a Christian and a minister, and I can honestly say, this woman has never really sat down to listen to the lessons that we learn in church, one is to not JUDGE. Which many here have done just that. But also, to love and forgive. Anyone who loses their temper over their beliefs needs an attitude adjustment and some real discipleship training.

Christmas is not about getting presents - its about a baby being born into the world to help save us - from ourselves. We are a wicked species, the only species of "animals" that attack and harm our own kind. Do not take what one person has done as far as their beliefs are concerned as representation of the rest of us. I love you all, and forgive you all for not understanding what the Christian life is really all about. I hope you will take time to go to one of the churches in your area and learn before you pass judgment. Thank you.

Love it!
written by Cleo on May 14, 2007

I love how she is religious and then completely attacks her son complete with profanity! Lovely! Maybe screaming at him will not keep him in the flock! If he has been confirmed he might be Catholic. Even cutting him off from Christmas won't do it. Try respecting his beliefs and having a normal conversation with him, then maybe you could get somewhere. If you simply attack him I doubt he will budge an inch.

My maternal grandfather is a preacher, so, naturally, my mother was raised extremely Christian. I was also raised Christian. When I started questioning Christianity in Middle School, I didn't tell her because I thought it was wrong. However, I didn't receive any concrete answers when I did ask questions (answers from her, my grandfather, or religious leaders). I told her I was athiest as a sophomore in college. She had the same reaction, then she tried to convert me back to Christianity. I still don't get Christmas presents from her... because Jesus believes in Santa, too.

Fruits of the Spirit
written by Daryl Miller on May 14, 2007

Please remember your own actions in everyday life. What are your principals and how well do you stick to them on a daily basis? This video appears to have a person without a transformed heart. She appears to be unable to discuss various aspects of what Christ taught and is about. People use other's names out of context all the time, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are representing that person accurately. If someone says they know me, yet does not accurately represent me, does that change who I really am because they are incorrect? Of course not. This boy is being wrongly persecuted, but remember that many Christians in Jesus' day, including Jesus, were persecuted too. Many times by ignorance and fear. If the produce of the Spirit is not there, perhaps Christ isn't either.

I think if most of our lives were caught on video tape... none of us would be too proud!
It seems that in this day and age with videos and cell phones, people are ready to attack those angry "sinners" very quickly.
There are many things out there that go on behind closed doors and nobody is around to comment.
Unfortunately, for this woman, she got caught using some very nasty language and she handled the situation very poorly.
Its a shame it is blown up on You Tube....just a sign of the times I guess~

This video is not so much about the son announcing his atheism as it is his mother's horrible reaction. And dad is just great...sitting with his head down trying to ignore the atheist! If this were my son, I would embrace his belief and not be threatened by it. Maybe mom is tired of going to church and being a hypocrite.

About the lady ( I am assuming from the name ) minister, we are the only species that attack and harm our own kind?????? You sure dont know squat about nature. Did you know in the Bible it says that a woman is supposed to hold her tongue in church? How can a woman preach while holding her tongue???? If one is going to preach the King James version of the bible, preach it and not your belief about it. This was a few second snippet...I love how everyone draws conclusions about anger issues and the husbands lack of stepping in. This is where the real problem lies, everyone thinks they know best for everyone else. I tend to agree with Mr. McCarty, God loves me but will condemn me for eternity to hell for sinning or not choosing correctly....what love!

This woman isn't a Christian... Being a christian is not about just going to church, or just even believing... Jesus said, "Faith by itself, is dead...Show me your faith without works...you believe that there is one God, you do well. Even the demons believe - and tremble! But.. O foolish man, faith without works (without it showing in your everyday actions) is dead!" James 2:17-20 So many people call themselves Christian... sooo many... but there will come a day when they will stand face to face with God and He will ask them to turn from them... because He never knew them... I am so glad that I KNOW my Savior and do not just know OF Him.

It's not okay to speak to your children that way!!! And when you do speak and treat your children that way, do you really expect them to treat and respect others? There are other clues, break out your "HOLY BIBLE".

Reply to Eric
written by Jeremiah on May 14, 2007

At least quote the fullness of Christ's words:

Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it." (Matthew 10:34-39 NASB)

A sinner takes the name of the Lord in the vain and speaks in anger. The mother's reaction is inappropriate but don't use a single sentence out of context or a single mement captured on video - and perhaps shown out of context - to justify your righteousness. Do you wonder how the camera happened to capture this heartwarming moment? Does it smack of setup? If you want to prove your point, understand both sides: your own and the one you oppose. When you drop a quotation from the bible into your post, you feel exhalted but many who have read and know all the utterances of Jesus - whether they believe them or not - will know you are ignorant of their meaning and thus, in that ignorance, humbled.

Whatever your belief system, if it is not endowed with hope and communicated with love, it is irrelevant.

Religion or not is personal
written by Jane on May 14, 2007

I know many atheists and religious people, and it's a personal decision. I think this mother is way out of line trying to use abuse and coercion to force a child to say he believes something he doesn't. I also think it's common for parents and community members to do this. Admitting one questions religion is a type of outing oneself.

written by liberalinthedesertaz on May 14, 2007

I think that the mom in the video, is why I am an athiest. The whole you are going to hell kinda argument tha I am sick and tired of hearing. I was lucky to have parents that didnt force religion down my throat when I wa s a kid. I have always lacked faith, so I guess it was a good thing that they werent like that kids parents. BTW what is wrong with her for using such foul langauage to a child?
And Bill O'Reilly and all the other pushers of faith in this country wonder why there is an "attack on Christmas"? I think its attacked more by Christians than anyone else.
I just hope that the parents let up on the kid before he becomes hurt, its hard enought being an athiest with parents that dont shove the crap down the throat...

It's a Shame
written by Kisha on May 14, 2007

It's a shame that this video is getting so much play. It is further a sad commentary that most people belive that this is how "religious" or Christian people behave. While I disagree with the young man in this video and totally believe in my heart that Jesus Christ is the Son of the Living God, I believe that it is my role as a Christian to display the acts that Jesus displayed...love, compassion, tenderness, meekness, gentleness, charity, etc.

I further believe that it is the lack of display of these attitudes that causes some to not believe in the God we (as Christians) say we serve. I know that this may sound a little harsh, but this video has made me think..."Have I been living to cause someone to believe what I do?"

Or, rather, is my life making others to not say they don't want to have anything to do with God?

By the way....

Atheists...Christians. - I CHALLENGE YOU
written by Rob on May 14, 2007

Religious or not...the son clearly has no respect for his mother. Could it be at the fault of his mother? Yes! Could the son simply be a royal pain in the ass? YES! I want to challenge all these readers/posters to look beyond the surface of this video (and your biased opinion) and see this video for what it really is. Lack of loyalty, lack of relationship, lack of respect! The son betrayed his family by recording a premeditated conversation. The mother, although instigated by her son, blew her cool and thereby blew her chances at 'leading by example' of her faith in God.
After reading through some of the comments on that video it’s clear that most supporting either case (predominantly the sons) are blinded by their anger with the opposing side and continue to ignore the real issues. Relationship! Lets face it...a good relationship will yield (more often then not) a healthy product.
I am sure some of your will reply to this in anger and say "you’re an *%*#"!."...but that simply proves my point. I am a Christian...but I understand that in order for someone to be wrong…someone else must be right. Right and Wrong help establish balance...without either....this would be Heaven.
note: Debate! Challenging each other is healthy and productive. However, spewing profanity followed by backless comments is clearly an act of insubordination. Atheists…challenge with intellect and answer with understanding. Christians...challenge with intellect and answer with patience.

Christmas is NOT about Christ
written by Derek on September 22, 2007

Christmas was celebrated for centuries before Christianity as the worship of the Sun God, Saturnalia. Also, Saturnalia can be traced back to Noah's great-great grandson, Tammuz(i) aka Dummuz(i). He was the child of Nimrod (grandson of Cush, Noah's son) and married to Semiramis. "They," he and Semirams are the first King and Queen after the Flood and built Babylon, they also started the first false religion, that is why in The Book of Revelation (Ch. 18), The Whore of Babylon represents the Churches of the World, because she was BUILT on corrupt practices that started in ancient Babylon, and not "true christianity, founded on Christ's true actions."

Semiramis and her child Tammuz (he was represented by a Cross or T) were actually called "the Mother and her child, the Queen of Heaven" a title Mary carry's today!!! Also, Nimrod actually hunted human beings down for sport, and he was killed and torn apart by a Boar, so Semiramis set about finding his pieces and had him wrapped (mummified) in one piece, soon after their child was born (starting the myth that it was born from sex with his corpse). They would forever be known as Isis and Orisis and their child, Horus. However, she and her child would be best known in CHRISTIANITY as the "Mother and Child." There are many, many ancient Madonna and Child statues that date back before Christianity celebrating them. Pictures, even. She even declared herself a virgin and her son a god, sound familiar?

http://philologos.org/__eb-ttb/default.htm

All these religions have just been handed down, age after age. Take the Catholic Nuns in Black & White. "Think Buddhism." They got it from there, same colors, same job title.

I'll shut up now. : ) Good luck though!
