CG Liquid Like You've Never Seen Before

Photo-realistic CG water from SIGGRAPH 2006. These water animations are so good you probably couldn't tell the difference from the real thing.

BFD, animators have been doing this level of work for years, with RealFlow and Maya.

Wow it looks as though I was the only one who found that demonstration rather impressive

No, you weren't the only one. Thoug i must say, the scenes with the water flowing through the 50s-Looking streets seem. Familiar... Might they be from a movie?

Cheers, joe!

I think it might be a scene from Poseidon

The difference between what's showcased at places like SIGGRAPH and what animators/artists to in Maya or Realflow is that, specifically with those box examples - the water flow and properties is not actually "animated" at all. It's generated automatically through complex physics algorithms, usually from scratch. They're not 3D animations, they're physics simulations.

I love it

I can appreciate the work of such 3d artists - I'm a freelance graphic designer and I can only wish and hope that someday I get my hands on programs used to create images and animations such as those... I love it!

I am a 3d artist, and I can clarify that this is what is called a "dynamic simulation" There is alot more than click a button and let it rip I can assure you. There are indeed complex Physics equations at work behind this stuff. True that this type of effect can be acheived in Maya or some other off the shelf 3d app, but rarely is that the case. There is an effects company called Hydraulix, who did many effects like this for the movie "Day After Tomorrow." And the guys did it all using their own proprietary software. To acheive effects like this in a program like Maya, you would have to spend days tweaking settings in order to get things to look right, and furthermore, it would be so slow, that you'd almost never be able to run your simulation interactively. So lets give the guys from Scanline a hand, without people like them, you'd never get half the cool stuff you see in movies!

Poseidon or Whatever

Further research on the Scanline site references the movie "Stormflood". http://www.scanlinevfx.com/projects.html

No matter how dated, old or what you think makes it work, its pretty cool. 50 years ago, special effects consisted of matte paintings and led lights for a spaceship. These days, leaps and bounds are crossing the border to stellar achievements.

And more. .

Their latest project is the film "300". Search for it. It looks insane.

Imagine

Imagine when computers are quick enought to do this in realtime. 5-10 years i would guess. Imagine the games, the virtual reality....it is going to be spectacular..we are livin in exciting times.
