Carl Sagan is a wonderfully inspirational individual, an immesnley intelligent and accomplished scientist with the charisma and understanding to share his knowledge with others.

He is greatly missed.

RIP Carl

I was waiting for Carl to say "billions and billions". Then I was reminded of how Johnny Carson would imitate Carl Sagan saying "billions and billions." I remember watching Cosmos on PBS back in the '80s ('70s?). I was completely enthralled.

A Nice Fairy Tale
written by Realist on June 19, 2007

This is a fantasy. He says we've been studying galaxies for "nearly a hundred years" and yet he "knows" so much about how galaxies form and self-destruct and how it takes "millions and millions" or "billions and billions" of years. Give me a break. Disney has better fairy tales. He mentions stars forming many times and yet in our 100 years of studying space, no man has EVER seen a star form. We've seen them die countless times, but never form. He mentions "billions of intelligent species" in the galaxy. Right. You can read all about them in the Enquirer next to "wolf-boy" and "OJ is innocent".

Sagan spouts theory as fact. He would have us believe we are here through nothing more than random chance. And yet, were that true, nature would dictate that we could never have survived the more violent species on our own planet. Further to that, why are we the only species on our planet who did "evolve" intelligence? And don't try to tell me that dolphins or elephants or apes are intelligent. Do they are about the stars or their own origins? Do they exercise morals?

Carl Sagan is a purveyor of elaborately designed, self-conceived fantasy and would indoctrinate you, your children and everyone you know to believing his fairy tale.

Isn't it funny how we laugh at the prospect that at one time almost everyone on the planet believed the Earth was flat? And we laugh thinking that at one time, almost everyone on the planet believed the Earth was the center of the universe. Just wait. In another couple hundred years, everyone will laugh at this widely-accepted joke.

The real universe

I've got to agree with "Realist". In a couple hundred years, we will be looking back and laughing, but we'll be laughing at the close-minded idiots who clung to literal translations of the Bible. Why are creationists so afraid of science and more specifically, large time-scales. What scientist ever said that there is no God? Science is not leading us away from God, it is leading us closer to Him by giving us greater understanding of what He created. Don't be afraid of vast time scales because God created them too. Sagan was a genius with amazing clarity of thought. Astronomers can draw conclusions about how stars form because they can be observed in all their various stages of life. It is a very slow process from our frame of reference. If anyone did observe a star to just form - now THAT would be proof of creationism! By the way, "Realist", Carl Sagan (a man immensely more learned than you or I) was not an athiest. He believed in God.
